How to Tell if Your Alocasia is Happy and Healthy

An Alocasia that is thriving is one of the most rewarding sights in the hobby. The first sign of
a happy plant is leaf turgidity. The stems should be firm and upright. If they are sagging or floppy, the plant is likely thirsty or suffering from root issues. Healthy leaves should have a
distinct luster—whether that’s the velvet sheen of a Black Velvet or the metallic glow of a
Cuprea.
Another indicator is active growth. In the spring and summer, a healthy Alocasia should be
pushing out new leaves regularly. If the new leaves are progressively larger than the old
ones, you’ve hit the sweet spot of light and nutrients. Check the undersides of the leaves
as well; they should be clean and free of tiny webs (spider mites favorite hangout).
Finally, look at the roots. If you see white, fuzzy roots poking out of the drainage holes, your
plant is healthy and ready for a slightly larger pot. Alocasias love to be a bit snug, but growth
is a great sign. To keep your plants in peak condition, we have a variety of organic fertilizers
and pest control solutions available on our nordichydro webshop.
