Is Alocasia Really as Difficult as Everyone Says?

Alocasias have earned a reputation as the drama queens of the plant world. One day they
are stunning, and the next, they’ve dropped three leaves because you looked at them
wrong. But are they actually difficult, or just misunderstood? Most of the difficulty comes
from the fact that Alocasias are very communicative—they show stress immediately.
The biggest hurdle is their dormancy period. When temperatures drop or light levels
decrease, Alocasias may drop all their leaves and retreat into their corm (the bulb-like base).
Many beginners think the plant is dead and throw it away, but it’s actually just sleeping!
Once warmth and light return, they bounce back stronger than ever.
They also have a one leaf in, one leaf out habit when they are young. This isn´t a sign of
sickness; the plant is simply recycling nutrients to grow a larger leaf. If you can master the
balance of chunky, well-draining soil and consistent moisture, they aren´t nearly as scary as
the internet claims. You can find everything you need to master Alocasia care available on
our nordichydro webshop.
