LED Grow Light Buying Guide: What Should I Look For?
Buying your first grow light can be overwhelming with all the technical jargon. To simplify it,
ignore equivalent wattage (like 600W equivalent) and look for the actual power draw
from the wall. This is the only way to know how much energy the light is truly providing.
Next, check the PPFD (Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density) map. This shows you how much
usable light reaches the plant at specific heights. A good light will have a relatively even
distribution so the plants in the corners aren´t starved while the one in the middle burns.
You should also consider the Color Rendering Index (CRI); a high CRI (90+) means the light
looks natural, allowing you to spot pests or nutrient deficiencies easily.
Finally, think about dimmability and coverage. Seedlings need much less intensity than a
flowering Alocasia. A light with a dimming knob gives you the flexibility to grow different
species at various life stages without moving the light up and down constantly. From entry-
level bars to high-output boards, you can find the perfect fit among the products available
