What Equipment Do I Need to Grow Microgreens?
One of the best things about microgreens is that the barrier to entry is very low. You don´t
need a greenhouse or heavy machinery. At a minimum, you need growing trays. Most
growers use a two-tray system: one tray with holes for drainage and another solid tray
underneath to catch excess water and allow for bottom watering, which keeps the delicate
greens dry and prevents mold.
Next, you need a growing medium. While soil works, many professionals prefer coco coir or
hemp mats because they are cleaner to use indoors and easier to compost after harvest.
You’ll also need a spray bottle for the initial germination phase to keep the seeds misted
without washing them away.
While a sunny windowsill can work, a small LED grow light ensures your greens don´t
become leggy (tall, thin, and weak) as they reach for the light. Consistent light leads to
denser, more flavorful harvests. For a curated selection of trays, mats, and grow lighting
