When is My Oyster Mushroom Block Ready to Fruit?
Timing is everything when it comes to mushrooms. If you try to fruit a block too early, the
mycelium might not have enough energy stored, leading to a weak harvest. You know your
oyster mushroom block is ready when it is solid white. You shouldn´t see much, if any, of the
original brown sawdust or straw.
The block should feel firm and integrated, almost like a block of styrofoam. Another sign of
readiness is the appearance of primordia or pins inside the bag. Sometimes, the
mushroom is so eager to grow that tiny bumps will start forming against the plastic. This is
the mushroom’s way of screaming, Let me out!
If you see any patches of green or blue, that’s contamination, and you should keep the bag
closed. But a healthy, snow-white block is a green light to start the fruiting process. Once
you make that first cut, the magic happens fast. You can find professional-grade fruiting
blocks and misting supplies available on our nordichydro webshop.
