What are oyster Mushrooms?

The oyster cap is a type of mushroom with a characteristic shell shape that resembles an open oyster shell. It has a short stem and a broad, flat sheath that can be different colors depending on the species. Oyster caps are edible and can be grown in a variety of substrates, such as coffee grounds or straw. They are also known for their high nutritional content and medicinal properties.

Instructions for use

Cut a cross in the narrow side of the bag of the bag, and the cross should be cut in the bottom of the bag.

Fold the top over the bag so the filter is covered and then turn the bag 180 degrees.

Spray the hole you have cut with water every day.

Wait for 10-14 days and you will see your first mushrooms grow.

Oyster mushroom fruiting blocks are essentially colonized substrate. Mushrooms aren´t
like plants; they don´t grow from seeds in soil. Instead, they grow from mycelium, a white,
root-like network that lives inside a food source like sawdust or straw. A fruiting block is a
bag of this substrate that has been completely overtaken by the mycelium.

The process is fascinating: the mycelium eats the substrate, breaking down the complex
lignins and cellulose to store energy. When the block is fully colonized (turned completely
white), it’s ready to fruit. By cutting a hole in the bag and exposing the mycelium to fresh
air and a bit of humidity, you signal to the fungus that it’s time to reproduce.

The mushroom pins (tiny baby mushrooms) emerge from the hole and grow at an
incredible rate—sometimes doubling in size every 24 hours! It’s a closed-loop system that
makes mushroom growing accessible to anyone with a kitchen counter.

Timing is everything when it comes to mushrooms. If you try to fruit a block too early, the
mycelium might not have enough energy stored, leading to a weak harvest. You know your oyster mushroom block is ready when it is solid white. You shouldn´t see much, if any, of the original brown sawdust or straw.

The block should feel firm and integrated, almost like a block of styrofoam. Another sign of readiness is the appearance of primordia or pins inside the bag. Sometimes, the
mushroom is so eager to grow that tiny bumps will start forming against the plastic. This is
the mushroom’s way of screaming, Let me out!

If you see any patches of green or blue, that’s contamination, and you should keep the bag closed. But a healthy, snow-white block is a green light to start the fruiting process. Once you make that first cut, the magic happens fast

It can be frustrating when you’ve set up your block, but nothing seems to be happening. The stage where mycelium turns into baby mushrooms is called pinning, and it requires a very specific set of environmental triggers. The most common reason for a lack of pins is low humidity. If the surface of the mycelium dries out, it becomes a skin that mushrooms can´t break through.

The second most common issue is Fresh Air Exchange (FAE). Mushrooms breathe oxygen
and exhale CO2, just like us. If CO2 levels are too high (which happens in stagnant
air), the block will refuse to fruit. You need a gentle breeze or to fan the block a few times a day to kickstart the process.

Finally, light and temperature play a role. While mushrooms don´t need sun for energy, they do need a circadian rhythm—a little bit of ambient light to tell them which way is up If your room is too hot (above 24°C for many species), the mycelium might stay in growth
mode instead of fruiting mode.
